Tada's Goal: Year in Review

Here it is, Tada's Goal: year in review.  This year our goal was food storage.  We have done pretty well at my house.  Each week we got just a few items and stocked up a little at a time.  Now the year is nearly over and it's time to begin a new year.   We hope it's your goal to get your food storage stocked up this next year or start over if you have been working on it already.  Here is our year in review.  Wishing you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year from us here at Tada's.

Tada's Goal: Week 32 -- Canned or frozen veggies.

(I try to use as many fresh veggies as possible but there are always those veggies you don't use all of.  Celery is the one I always end up wasting.  I don't like it raw but I love it in soups and casserols. But at my store I can only buy big bundles of it, so instead of wasting it I cut it up in to pieces I can easily add to soup, and freeze it) --I use this method for a lot of different kinds of veggies/fruit that might be about to go bad,  I hate wasting food so this is a great way to save it.

(bad picture I know,.. but the best I could get with a baby in my arms who now grabs at everything  :/ )

Since I live in a super hot climate we don't have the luxury of farmers markets or vegetable stands on the side of the road (insert frown) so I went ahead and purchased my tomatoes.  However canning your own is great too.

Tada's Goal: Week 29 - 72 Hour Kits

72 hour kits are probably the most important part of your food storage.  A basic kit usually includes the following:

  • Water, one gallon of water per person per day for at least three days, for drinking and sanitation
  • Food, at least a three-day supply of non-perishable food
  • Battery-powered or hand crank radio and a NOAA Weather Radio with tone alert and extra batteries for both
  • Flashlight and extra batteries
  • First aid kit
  • Whistle to signal for help
  • Dust mask to help filter contaminated air and plastic sheeting and duct tape to shelter-in-place
  • Moist towelettes, garbage bags and plastic ties for personal sanitation
  • Wrench or pliers to turn off utilities.
  • Manual can opener for food
  • Local maps
  • Cell phone with chargers, inverter or solar charger
Those of you who stocked up on water during our Water week already have a head start.  Your kits can include store bought packets like the one shown above or there are a ton of ideas on the internet.  www.ready.gov and lds.about.com are a couple of great places to start. Another website that has great ideas for baby, toddler, and kid friendly kits is pinterest.

You will need 1 kit for each person in your household.  Keep them somewhere that is easily accessible so that you can grab it and go if you need to.
